I have no idea what my experiences were because I thought everything was a lucid dream. I didn't know about anything else because I really had no frame of reference. Let me just say though, that I know what you're talking about.
Go find a really high swing set and swing. I would always do that within a lucid dream. It's the same feeling, only you can choose to do it and don't have to wait for some random motion to appear for you. Although at the time I had no idea what I was doing and I just assumed it was a part of my lucid dream, this always worked. When I got really high, I'd look forward as I swung back, and then lean back and close my eyes as I'd go forward. I always got this vibration you're talking about and I'd *poof* be...(continued)

I am so glad I'm not the only one who feels this way sometimes! Unfortunately for me (and hopefully fortunately for me because I have every intention of getting it back) I didn't start having these sorts of insecurities until after I no longer had the abilities to do what I was doing. I really didn't have much knowledge about any of it. At that point I started poking around and realizing what a hard time other people have, or that people simply can't do it at all...and it's had the effect of seeming to make my dreamer's block worse! I found this forum to hopefully change that and so far I'm feeling really optimistic.

Good luck, Charles! Wanting to succeed is a great help. BTW don't worry about too much about vibrations. Different people experience different things: vibrations, tingling on the body, buzzing, whooshing, strange noises, etc. But when you project - you will know it!
I use to try it the way you do it, I would sometimes spend 4 to 5 hours each day lying down with binaural beats, and the most I ever got was rapid eye movements and my heart rate would increase a huge amount, but no vibrations happened. I had the vibrations happen before I was trying to get them through this way, and that was simply the way I have now come back to do again, I usually meditate for a bit before I go to sleep, then either set the alarm clock to wake me up about 4 or 5 in the morning, but sometimes I randomly get up at that time anyway, then I stay up for a bit, then go back to bed and usually have a lucid dream where I somehow end up triggering the vibrations. That was one way I had them happen to me which was a few months ago, in the past recent two weeks it was fairly similar, but when I wake up in the...(continued)
