Position doesn't matter - I'm doing it both in the morning and in the bed at night. I only try to guard myself against putting my palms flat against any solid surface, but perhaps even that's not necessary.
The 'rocking' is a technique described by Austrian occultist Alfred Ballabene. It involves imagining that you're rocking or floating or falling until you begin to actually feel you are. It's described on what is left of his "Astral Pages":

The best time is to sleep on 11 PM and then waking up at 3 Am and stay awake for 10 minutes (( drink water, walk at home)) and then going back to sleep, this time is the best time ever.

Also, when I project and I'm in my house, there is usually a dream character present. I dunno, I ignore the first person I see, because I might question why they are in my house. Instead i cheerfully wave goodbye as I float through the ceiling, not really paying attention to who I'm waving at. Just be happy your conscious for the experience and start exploring the world :)
REM cycle, which is when all of this phenomenon occurs, our brains have the exact activity of waking life, EXACT. Our brains use this time to experiment with alternate realities. There are some really cool documentaries about recent brain and dream studies from science channels, I'll post the titles some time.
As far as sleep paralysis and projection..like xanath said, it's very easy to mistake the dream world for the physical world, so why would you question it?
