I have always heard that your head must be facing magnetic north to project. I have had some projections while my head is pointing north but last night I projected with my head facing south. Just throwing it out there so no one gets discouraged if they can't face north :)

Actually head must not be placed in the north with feet in the south. You can keep the head in south with feet in north. If ones head is in north and feet in south, then he is facing South. As per Indian traditions South is the direction of Yama (God of death) and only a dead body must be placed in that position. Also if one is sleeping in the north-south direction, it is in line with the earth's magnetic field and will create disturbance in human bodies which has high iron (hemoglobin) content.
